Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 1 October 2024 – In observance of International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Malaysia took centre stage to highlight the pressing issues and opportunities surrounding ageing populations in the country. Through a collaborative broadcast with Astro Awani and a visit to the national centre for research in gerontology, geriatrics, and gerontechnology (MyAgeing), UNFPA Malaysia underscored the importance of addressing the equity gaps, challenges, and solutions related to ageing.
The special broadcast on Astro Awani featured expert insights from panelists discussing Malaysia's ageing population and the implications for the future. The discussion delved into the unique challenges faced by older persons, including healthcare, financial security, and social isolation. Panelists also explored potential solutions and opportunities, emphasising the need for inclusive policies and sustainable development.
This special panel included a keynote address by Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women Family & Community Development and honourable panelists like; Tengku Aira Tengku Razif, Assistant representative UNFPA; Associate Professor Dr. Rahimah Ibrahim, Director, Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing, UPM; Lily Fu, Gerontologist, Founder of SeniorsAloud & former VP of University of Third Age (U3A) Malaysia.
In addition to the broadcast, Dr Julitta Onabanjo, UNFPA Malaysia Country Representative and Country Director for Thailand, visited MyAgeing. The institute plays a crucial role in driving innovation and addressing the multidimensional challenges of population ageing. Dr Onabanjo's visit highlighted the importance of research, development, commercialisation, and innovation (RCDI) in shaping a future where older persons can live with dignity and well-being.
As Malaysia continues to experience rapid population ageing, the country is actively working to develop a comprehensive care economy that supports the needs of older persons. The government's plans include investing in healthcare infrastructure, promoting active ageing, and fostering intergenerational solidarity. These efforts align with the United Nations' commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of sustainable development.
UNFPA Malaysia remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of older persons. Through its programmes and partnerships, the organisation works to promote age-friendly societies, strengthen health systems, and empower older women. By addressing the challenges and seizing the opportunities presented by ageing populations, Malaysia can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all its citizens.
