Kuala Lumpur, 13th December – “MWGF: The Review” is scheduled to air at 2pm on Saturday, 16th December 2023, on Astro AWANI, Channel 501. The special 60-minute feature, brought to you by the United Nations and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Malaysia, with the support of Astro Awani, will review our nation’s progress over the past three years in advancing the rights and well-being of women and girls, drawing on the resolutions of the last three iterations of the Malaysia Women and Girls Forum (MWGF).
The special episode will feature exclusive interviews with YB Dato’ Sri Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), YB Ramkarpal Singh, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), academicians and civil society representatives.
“MWGF: The Review” is an exploration of the key themes and takeaways from the Malaysia Women and Girls Forum, which is an annual event that has run every year since 2020. MWGF brings together key stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector to discuss key social, economic and legislative changes essential for empowering Malaysian women and girls.
This Astro AWANI special episode of “MWGF: The Review”, will feature boardroom-style interviews discussing three main areas for women’s empowerment: economic opportunity, legislation and gender equality, and education, gender norms and awareness.
It will highlight key issues such as universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights (SRH/RR), discrimination, advancing The Care Economy, legislation to eliminate all forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Equal Citizenship Rights.
Dr. Asa Torkelsson, UNFPA Malaysia’s Country Representative, expressed her excitement at expanding the reach of MWGF to a wider Malaysian audience: “I am overjoyed that, this year, we will be able to expand our work and al precious efforts towards expanding gender equality through the Malaysia Women and Girls Forum to a wider audience in Malaysian through our special collaboration with Astro AWANI,” she said.
“It is my hope that MWGF will continue to expand as a platform to engage citizens with the most critical issues affecting our women and girls today, setting the groundwork for Malaysia to achieve Gender Equality, or Goal 5 within the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.”
